By plane it's about a two hour trip from Shanghai to Beijing. There is this really great site on the web called Flychina.com. Roundtrip it's about $276. By train takes about 12 hours and costs about $50. However, after getting to Beijing, it may be hard to get around the city if you don't speak the language. In addition, the Great Wall is about a hour bus ride away from the city. I would suggest going with a tour. There is a website called tour-beijing.com and it offers great tours by bus to popular sites in Beijing, from the Great Wall to the Forbidden City. Prices range from $20-$40 and includes lunch, admission tickets, bilingual tour guides, and an air-conditioned bus.

The Great Wall is in the north of China, and the most popular segments are located close to Beijing. Beijing is a good hour and a half away from Shanghai by plane (one-way tickets are roughly USD 125 if discounted). Several overnight trains are available, costing USD 60 each way. It's not possible to day-trip the Great Wall from Shanghai :-)

Of the two most common tourist areas of the wall from Beijing (Badaling and Mutianyu) I would recommend Mutianyu, which has less tourists. If you have time and a good local guide, the portion of the wall from Tianjin (Huangyaguan) is very lightly visited and is incredibly beautiful.
