I was assigned the topic of "U.S China Relations" for a research paper, and am having trouble figuring out what has happened politically. What have been our controversies/policies with China? Or what's important about our relations? Mostly just trade?

You can always start with the US Department of State:

They have a direct link to US-China relations found here:

I would describe today's US China relations as a love/hate situation, it cannot be summarized in one sentence. There are a few issues to consider:

1) Today China is United States' biggest creditor holding almost US 1 trillion (yes with a T). US wants the China's currency to appreciate and China refuses. China is afraid the US$ would depreciate or loses its world currency status eventually, and complains the US low interest policy.

2) Some US politicians are complaining US companies are moving their manufacturing to China. But deep inside they also know this has kept US inflation rate low for the past decade and their citizens are benefiting from the low cost of merchandises.

3) Although some US politicians are wary of China's military expansion and influence over Africa, the US needs China's help in fighting terrorism because China shares its borders with Pakistan, Afghanistan, North Korea, and its vote in the United Nations when it comes to Iran or some hostile countries.

China is a patient boyfriend dating an overly demanding American girlfriend. America always wants gifts (exports) and money (trade imbalance, loans), but still complains (about Chinese political system). China puts up with America's whining in order to have sex (bi-lateral relations) with her. However, China is also dating other girls on the side (international relations).
