Pearls in China are incredibly inexpensive. You can get a strand of relative quality for less than $5. Pretty much every city in China sells pearls and most of them are cultured, and the majority of them are real. You can tell by rubbing one against another. If it feels gritty and uneven, it's real. If it's really smooth, it's fake. Things in HK aren't necessarily cheaper. Don't go to jewelry stores because they are really expensive. Buy them from people who are selling on the street because you can bargain with them to lower their prices. As leverage, say you are buying a lot and they will lower prices even more. Pearls can come in all shapes and sizes and colors. It all depend on what people like. Black pearls are really nice but more expensive than others. White pearls are your traditional. The market doesn't make a lot of pearl earrings. Most of them are studs or one single drop pearl. You won't find multiple pearls together to make a chandelier earring. But the peach colored ones are also nice. As for customs, don't put everything together in one bag. Stuff a few between your clothes or shoes. Spread them out throughout your luggage. Unlike pirated DVDs or fake purses, you shouldn't have any problems.

If your friend is in Beijing, try the Hong Qiao market. One of the floors has plenty of stalls selling pearls, both fresh and salt. Huge choice of colours and sizes. Freshwater pearls are cheaper than saltwater pearls. One of the stalls display a newspaper cutting about ex-president Clinton buying pearls from that stall during his China visit. Take your time to look around and bargain, bargain, bargain!

Another place where you can get pearls is the streets around the Qing Ping Market in Guangzhou. No fixed location but the last time there were many sellers in a street selling herbs but browse around the area.

Bargaining is extremely important in these places.

Cultured pearls are formed by using introducing a small little bit of shell or different difficult substance into the oyster, and arranged for it to "ripen". organic pearls are actually not brought about. they are the two effectual, because it takes an prolonged time to create a pearl. i would not purchase pearls on line. this is something this is greater helpful picked out in guy or woman, simply by fact no rely how solid the photos seem, you may in no way tell what you're paying for.
