Tens years ago the British appointed a Governor to head Hong Kong. They had no say in this practice. Now they have a convoluted election for the leader (must like Americas), but have been promised free elections by 2012. Beijing approves of this. Beijing also has to approve the election results. Who knows?

We can all clearly see that Beijing has been moving to a more moderate government, allowing opposing parties into the CCP this year. Yes, maybe symbolic, but also a sign that China is enjoying its new found wealth and power as a leader in the world.

In forty years Chinese will elect their government, they do now, just not so many choices now. But, in forty years China will be the super power and most of the citizens will be middle class much like America used to be. China's leaders are very smart people, they take care of China first, and have never been an aggressor nation. Chinese learned from America's mistakes.

The events of the past year have only cemented the Chinese people together! They do love China. All the lies from the west, the torch being shamed by the west, and now the worst diaster in modern history. This has all only made China and Chinese stronger, I am very proud to live here.

The Chinese government actually asked for tents, something that is indeed needed very badly at this time. Who has responsed with help? Basically no one except the Chinese people giving billions or trillions of RMB. And a very sad thing to see from the supposed richer countries. Actually, I can see that Chinese don't need their help. The richest country in the world can and is taking care of their people in a way that the west never could.

Don`t know for Hong Kong`s political and law system won`t change in next 40 years, but I think under british`s rule, no matter how good economy could be its still a colony of british, and a shame of the human history, so I think Hongkong is better under the administrative of Communist government.

This remains to be seen cause Hong Kong still uses the British law and its original ways of doing things, although its government its directly under Mainland China's rule. Hong Kong itself its already a dynamic in economy as dubbed as one of the four Asian small Tiger, with Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea as its main counterparts. Japan and Hong Kong can really fight it out during the British rule and its still is. But after 2047, it may or may not change, so keep your finger cross till then, if you still around by then.

It is hard to tell. It has been 10 years since under China's rule. Hong Kong is still using British laws such as traffic, and some criminal laws. China is controlling the foreign affair of Hong Kong as demostrated when US fleet was denied entry to Hong Kong ports

I am sure we will know the answer after 40 years, (If I am still alive)

No, because the Brits wouldn't have granted HK democracy anyways because if they intended to, they would've done so far before 1997. China will bring no political changes to HK either, but because the mainland is so rich, it has brought huge economic boosts to the original economic foundations of HK during Brit colonialism. There is far less crime in HK today than there was during the Brit times, but you've also far more tourists from the mainland of whom some are stuck with their near-savage ways of doing things and apply it in HK. There are pros/cons of both rule, but people should not over-villanize the Chinese government either because it shows that they are biased themselves.

It became one of the economic powerhouses in Asia then it was under the British government.

Where or not it was better socially under the British government has yet to be seen as if I believe the China signed a contract stating that things would not changed until after 50 years had passed.
